If you
love golf, you’ll love Usedclubs.
To the
uninitiated, golf is a sport! This is where a
‘player’ has to put a small round dimpled ball into each
hole on the golf course with the lowest number of strokes,
to do this you have to use a club and there are a number of
clubs that can be used.
Golf is
known as a ‘ball game’ but unlike football and rugby does
not use a set sized area to play in. Each course
differs in shape and size.
Golf is
thought to have been a Scottish invention as it seems to
have been mentioned in two Scottish 15th century
laws, but there is a slight doubt to that as it mentions
‘gowf’ which could have stood for hurling or field hockey
rather than golf.
The
oldest playing golf course is The Old Links at Musselburgh
Racecourse, it is thought that Mary Queen of Scots played
there in 1567.
Golf is
usually played on an 18 hole golf course, St Andrews Links
was originally 11 holes played twice – making 22 holes,
however several of the holes were deemed to be too short so
were combined down to 9 holes and played twice making an 18
hole golf course.
There
have been a lot of changes in equipment since the start of
the 19th century, better golf ball designs,
better materials for the clubs such as metal shafts in
the1930’s and in the 1980’s the shafts were made of graphite
, the wood heads were replaced by steel and then titanium in
the 1970’s.
Golf tees
were invented in the 1930’s and started off as wood.
Over the years plastic tees have been developed although the
wooden tees are still the most popular.
Golf
balls have ‘dimples’ and are famous for these. They
have dimples to decrease ‘aerodynamic drag’ which allows the
ball to go further. Flags are also used in golf; these
show the position of the hole to the players. When all
players are within ‘putting distance’ the flag is removed
from the hole by a ‘caddy’ to allow the ball to be played
into the hole.
Famous
golfers that you might recognise are Jack Nicklaus, Tiger
Woods, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.
